"I went to jail for Abhishek", says Anubrata Mondal after joining Ritabrata camp
In a gesture of political courtesy, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has decided to restore security cover to Mira Bhattacharya, the widow of former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya. Following the passing of the veteran Marxist leader on August 8, 2024, the previous Trinamool Congress administration had withdrawn all security personnel deployed at her residence. The new state government, which took charge in May 2026 with Adhikari at the helm, is now actively working to reverse that decision and reinstate protection at her Palm Avenue flat.
Mira Bhattacharya continues to lead a highly simplified life at her long-time residence located at 59A, Palm Avenue. The flat has a historical significance of its own, as former Chief Minister Jyoti Basu had once offered to upgrade the residence, but Buddhadeb Bhattacharya chose to remain there, a decision his widow has stayed steadfast to even after his passing. Currently residing there alone, the state administration noted that restoring her security is a necessary correction to the incivility shown by the preceding regime.
Despite the clear ideological differences between the ruling saffron camp and the Left parties, the Chief Minister prioritized the security of the former first lady. Following the change in the state's political leadership, Mira Bhattacharya welcomed the transition and praised the incoming administration. She expressed her hopes that the state would move past the era of syndicate rule and return to a peaceful pre-2011 atmosphere, while wishing success for the implementation of the new government's electoral promises.
